Bridges of Brotherhood in Arakan

The Rohingya Muslims, one of the most persecuted minorities in the world, have been striving to hold on to life for years under challenging camp conditions far from their homes. Within the scope of our 2026 Qurbani campaign, we reach out to our Arakanese brothers and sisters struggling in cramped shelters in refugee camps, letting them feel they are not alone through your trusts.

Essential Facts About Arakan

Why do we provide aid to Arakan? +

Rohingya Muslims have been subjected to systematic persecution, violence, and discrimination in Myanmar for decades and were declared "stateless" by the state. Due to escalating violence in 2017, hundreds of thousands of people were forced to take refuge in neighboring Bangladesh as their villages were burned. With no place to go and little hope of return, these people live entirely dependent on external humanitarian aid.

What is the population and demographic structure of the Rohingya? +

Currently, more than 1 million Rohingya refugees live in the Cox's Bazar region of Bangladesh, home to the majority of the displaced population. More than half of the camp population consists of children. Trauma-stricken women, orphans, and the elderly are the most vulnerable segments of this fragile demographic. Lacking the rights to education and work, future generations face immense uncertainty.

What is the scale of the humanitarian crisis in the region? +

Cox's Bazar is the largest and most densely populated refugee camp in the world. Shelters made of makeshift bamboo and tarpaulins are extremely vulnerable to natural disasters such as monsoon rains, floods, and landslides. Additionally, devastating fires frequently break out in the camps, leaving tens of thousands homeless instantly. Limited access to clean drinking water, hygiene issues, and malnutrition constantly trigger the risk of epidemic diseases.

What is Islamic Relief doing for Arakan? +

Islamic Relief has stood by Rohingya refugees since the peak of the crisis. We continue critical infrastructure projects such as shelter construction and repair, deep-water well drilling, and the establishment of hygiene (WASH) facilities. In addition to emergency medical support and creating safe spaces for women and children, we strive to prevent food crises through large-scale meat and food parcel distributions during Qurbani and Ramadan.
