The word "Aqiqah" is of Arabic origin and also refers to the first hair on a newborn child's head. The Aqiqah qurbani is an animal sacrificed to express gratitude to Allah for the blessing of a newborn child. Although it is not religiously obligatory, it is a strong and beautiful worship considered Sunnah.
At Islamic Relief, we accept your Aqiqah qurbani trusts, which you intend for your children—the most beautiful gift from Allah—with the utmost care. We sacrifice your donations in full compliance with Islamic rules and our principle of transparency, delivering them to the tables of impoverished and needy families struggling to survive in war-torn tent camps in Syria.
We deliver your Aqiqah sacrifices as a blessing to the tables of our Syrian brothers and sisters who have been struggling with years of conflict and harsh migration conditions. Your trusts are in safe hands with our slaughtering processes, carried out within the framework of hygiene rules by carefully selecting healthy animals that are religiously permissible to sacrifice.
The Aqiqah qurbani can be performed at any time from the day the child is born until they reach puberty. However, the most virtuous (afdal) time is the seventh day after birth. On the seventh day of the child's birth, it is Sunnah to give the child a name, shave their hair, give gold or silver equivalent to its weight in charity, and perform the Aqiqah sacrifice.
According to the Sunnah and advice of our Prophet (PBUH), it is recommended for those with sufficient financial means to sacrifice two animals for a boy and one for a girl. However, for those with limited means, sacrificing just one animal for a boy is sufficient, and the Sunnah is also fulfilled in this manner.
The parents who perform the sacrifice, the child, family members, and all relatives can eat from the meat of the Aqiqah sacrifice. However, as Islamic Relief, all the Aqiqah sacrifices you entrust to us are delivered directly to poor, orphan, and needy families living in the camps in Syria, in a manner that best suits the spirit of this worship.
