What is a Shukur (Gratitude) Qurbani?

A Shukur qurbani is an animal offered to express gratitude to Allah after achieving a desired goal, receiving a long-awaited blessing (such as purchasing a house or car, or recovering from an illness), or overcoming an affliction. Although it is not religiously obligatory (wajib), it is a recommended (mustahabb) and praised act of worship.

Offering a Shukur qurbani is one of the most beautiful ways to remember that Allah is the true owner of all blessings and to express our gratitude to Him. At Islamic Relief, we accept your trusts with great care, performing the sacrifices in full compliance with Islamic rules and our principle of transparency, delivering them directly to war-affected, impoverished families struggling in tent camps in Syria.

"So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me." (Surah Al-Baqarah, 152)

Why Islamic Relief?

We deliver your Shukur qurbanies as a blessing to the tables of our Syrian brothers and sisters who have been struggling with years of conflict and harsh displacement conditions. Your trusts are in safe hands through our slaughtering processes, conducted under strict hygiene standards by carefully selecting healthy animals that are religiously permissible for sacrifice.

Things to Know About the Shukur Qurbani

When is the Shukur Sacrifice Performed?

There is no specific time restriction or fixed requirement for performing a Shukur qurbani. A person can perform this sacrifice whenever the intended blessing is granted or at any permissible time they feel inclined to do so. However, it is most virtuous (afdal) not to delay the act of gratitude once the blessing is received.

Who Can Eat the Meat of a Shukur Qurbani?

Unlike an Adak (vow) sacrifice, everyone—including the person offering the qurbani, their spouse, children, and parents—is allowed to eat from the meat of a Shukur sacrifice. However, all Shukur sacrifices donated through Islamic Relief are distributed directly to poor, orphaned, and needy families living in Syrian camps to best serve the purpose of the donation.

What is the Difference Between Aqiqah and Shukur Qurbanies?

While both are offered out of gratitude to Allah; an Aqiqah sacrifice is performed specifically for a newborn child as a gesture of thanks for the blessing of parenthood. A Shukur sacrifice, on the other hand, is offered in general gratitude for any achievement, recovery from illness, acquisition of property, or simply as an expression of overall thankfulness to Allah.
